Pharmacists’ Role in Emergency Preparedness During the COVID-19 Pandemic

October 29, 2020 | Webinar

HIMSS-NCPDP Pharmacy Town Hall Series: Part 1 of 3

Continuing education credits for pharmacists and pharmacy technicians will be available for this webinar.

Pharmacy is playing a critical role during the COVID-19 pandemic, ensuring patients have access to tests and, when available, vaccinations. In an unprecedented move on March 13, 2020, pharmacies across the United States were called into action by President Trump to provide COVID-19 testing services to patients. This greatly expanded access to tests because nearly 90% of Americans live within five miles of a community pharmacy.

Urgent industry guidance was developed for:

  • Testing to facilitate the exchange of data through interoperable industry standards, including the different types of tests, specimen collection and testing procedures;
  • Product/service identifiers for FDA-authorized tests and test kits;
  • Products supplied through the Strategic National Stockpile;
  • Testing certifications;
  • Payer considerations;
  • Details completing a claim request;
  • And related, pharmacist-provided services.

Attend this session to learn about key considerations in developing the guidance from product identification to workflow and interoperability challenges.

Learning Objectives

  • Describe actions taken to prepare the pharmacy industry to help patients with their medication needs and testing during a disaster or pandemic.
  • Identify necessary data elements needed to successfully process a claim for COVID-19 testing or rendered services.
  • Recognize a COVID-19 test product that does not have a product ID.
  • Define services pharmacists provide that are directly related to the COVID-19 pandemic.
